St. John, VI - Island Facts!

St. John, VI is one of three islands that make up the US Virgin Islands. Most are uninhabited, in the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies, east of Puerto Rico and lying between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

St. John, VI is also the tropical paradise where you'll find over two dozen vacation rental homes and villas available from Catered To! The following are some facts about our island:

The USVI Flag

United States Virgin Islands Flag

The flag of the US Virgin Islands was adopted by Executive Order on May 17,1921.

Upon a white field between, the letters V I, an American Eagle in yellow is displayed with the shield of the United States on its breast. A sprig of laurel is in its dexter talon, while a bundle of three blue arrows are in its sinister talon. The letters V I and the three arrows are in azure blue and the blue of the shield is the blue of the arms and flag of the United States.

Also known as the "Sugar Bird" or "Banana Quit," the Yellow Breast is distinguished by its brilliant yellow plumage.

The Yellow Breast is an indigenous bird to the Virgin Islands. Friendly and ubiquitous, it is well-known for its liking for sugar.

The Amazing Iguana

A small Iguana on St. John, U.S. Virgin IslandsGreen iguanas have a row of spines along their backs and along their tails which help protect them from predators. Their tails can be used like whips and can be painful when they strike. Like many other lizards, when grabbed by the tail, the iguana can allow it to break, escape and eventually regrow a new one. In addition, iguanas have well developed dewlaps which helps regulate their body temperature. It is also used in courtships and displays.

Like many trpoical species, the green iguana is also threatened by habitat destruction. The green iguana is also a victim of the pet industry. Many people in the United States and elsewhere want a green iguana for a pet, so there is a big demand for their capture. Although many pet iguanas are now being raised on iguana farms, capture from the wild has lowered their numbers.
